From the 15th to 19th century was the dark age of Khmer Kingdom when the land continued to be narrowed. Angkor was invaded and destroyed several times.

In this period, Cambodia changed capital two times. In 16th century under the rule of King Angchan I, capital was located in Lovek. The new capital could not exist long when Ayutthaya Kingdom of Thai attacked Chenla and destroyed Lovek. In 1618 under King Chaychettha II’ rule, capital one more time changed into Oudong. Since the 17th century, Cambodia suffered severe weakness while the two neighbor countries Siam and Northern Vietnam. Vietnam's settlement on the Mekong Delta led to its annexation of that area at the end of the 17th century. Such foreign encroachments continued through the first half of the 19th century.
