Cambodia - French Colonial Period (1863-1953)
In 1863, King Norodom signed an agreement with the French to establish a protectorate over his kingdom. The state gradually came under French colonial rule.
During the World War II, The Vichy (French) government signed an agreement with Japan to allow the Japanese military transit through French Indochina. In 1945, Cambodia has a short time of independence before Alliance re-established control of French in Indochina. The King Norodom Shinanok – the hero of Cambodia with his talent and strong determination carried out “royal crusade for independence" which led to the independence of Cambodia in 1953.
