Situated on the south of the Royal Palace, The Silver Pagoda or Wat Preah Keo Pagoda, which means 'The Temple of the Emerald Buddha', is a unique ancient architecture in Phnom Penh attracting a large number of domestic and overseas tourists every year.
The Pagoda is so named because it has stored the sacred 90 kilograms Buddha statue made by solid gold and Baccarat crystal in 17th century along with the gold Maitreya Buddha encrusted 9584 diamonds. Both statues have existed more than one century and witnessed the vicissitudes of Phnom Penh. Nowadays, it is known as the “Silver Pagoda” because its floor was paved with 5329 silver tiles, each one weighs 1.125kg. However, only a small tiled area is open to the public. With more than 1650 treasures which were collected, contributed and donated from the nobles or other Royals and especially no abbot Monk, The Silver Pagoda play a role as a museum storing precious cultural and religious treasures.
Heretofore, the Silver Pagoda was the venue for some Royal and Buddhist rituals as well as where the King listen to monks preaching. Currently, it is the official temple of the Cambodia’s King and a famous historical site characterizing the culture, history and religion of Cambodia. The other architectures such as stupas- the place of worship of the King, Queen and princess, the Kantha Bopha memorial site, the equestrian statue of King Norodom were built in addition later.
With the typical architecture of temples in Cambodia along with the collection of priceless treasures, Silver Pagoda deserves as the symbol of Cambodia and also an attraction you should not miss.
