The traditional handicraft is one of the main professions of Cambodia which plays an important role in growing the economy and promoting the country's image to international friends. Therefore, the Cambodian government the European Union and the French Foreign Ministry has funded a huge amount of money for the establishment of Artisans d'Angkor to open up employment opportunities for young people having the difficult circumstances as well as restore and preserve the ancient Khmer Arts & Crafts forms such as sculpture art in stone, wood, lacquer ware, silk-making or art of painting on statues and silk.
Established since 1998, until now Artisans d’Angkor has developed to become a large organization with the scale of 1300 employees, contributing to solving a large number of employment needs of adolescents in rural areas with the good conditions about education and welfare. They work in 48 different smaller workshops spreading over 10 villages in Siem Reap province. This workshops model has been received the support and praise from the international organizations because its products meet the requirements about quality and design based on the manufacturing process of traditional Khmer craftwork. Artisans D’Angkor is a continuation and retention of precious traditional values for the next generation and on a certain aspect, it also contributes to restore the glory of one of the mightiest empire in the past. With the continuous efforts during the past 15 years, the workshop currently is known as one of the best silk manufacturers in Cambodia and other artisan crafts are also appreciated. Especially, Artisans D’Angkor gained a number of prestigious awards for Handicrafts in South and Southeast Asia attributed by UNESCO and was officially recognized as a member of World Crafts Council, the place of honoring traditional craftsmanship and heritage around the world.
