Lying behind the high walls and a romantic square with hundreds of pigeons in Phnom Penh is the Royal Palace of Cambodia-a famous cultural and historical attraction standing stately through over a century.

Constructed in 1866 by King Norodom, The Royal Palace is considered the most magnificent architectural ensemble in Phnom Penh. It is where the Cambodian royal family and foreign dignitaries live as well as the venue for various royal ceremonies. Currently, The Palace is home to King of Cambodia, His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk and the Queen of Cambodia, Her Majesty Preah Reach Akka-Mohesey Norodom Monineath Sihanouk. Therefore, there are some buildings within this architectural complex which close to the public or only open when the king is not in here. The construction location was also carefully considered by the geologist and astrologers because the Cambodian people believe that natural conditions can affect the destiny of King as well as the nation.

Cambodia's Royal Palace is extremely unique and sophisticated architectural ensemble, built entirely based on traditional Cambodian style with white and yellow as the dominant colors. Experiencing the vicissitudes of history, many buildings now are not the original but was restored and renovated with the aid from abroad.

In the palace compound, one of the highlights attracting a large number of visitors is The Throne Hall located on the left of the main entrance, where organizes coronation ceremony for the King, almost all important meetings of the government or the formal meetings with foreign officials. It is outstanding with a 59 meter golden tower along with the beautiful ceiling murals of the Reamker.

Nearby is Chanchhaya Pavilion, also known as "Moonlight Pavilion", was built in 1913-14 under the reign of King Sisowath. It is an outdoor stage for royal troupe, including a large balcony where the king appears ahead of the crowd and a spacious campus to organize the royal parties.

In the south of the Royal Throne Hall, the impressive Napoleon III Pavilion based on European style is a gift that French Emperor Napoleon III donated King Norodom in 1876. After the French government supported to remodel in 1991, the current building has become a small museum displaying the royal artifacts as well as the related pictures.

On the campus of the Royal Palace has an ancient temple called Wat Phra Kaeo, meaning "Temple of the Emerald Buddha”. The pagoda stores a sacred 90 kilograms Buddha statue made by solid gold and Baccarat crystal.
